Can you believe that this Sunday is the last day of the London Olympics? It feels like only yesterday that the Queen sky-dived into the Olympic Stadium and Voldemort was defeated by Mary Poppins over a soundtrack of Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells (you can’t not love The UK). Anyway, this Sunday is the day of the closing ceremony, and as is custom with such a secretive event, there are a myriad of rumours circulating the internet. Forget The Who and Muse though, here are the rumours that pop fans will rejoice at.
The Spice Girls
Yes, the nation’s favourite girlband look set to reform for this Sundays spectacle. Having previously denied that they will be performing, the girls have been hinting that they will be performing throughout the last few weeks. The first sign that the nation’s lives would well and truly be ‘spiced’ came when Victoria Beckham landed in The UK just before the games began. Since then, she also tweeted a picture of her microphone from the bands 2007/2008 tour. Mel B then got in on the action, tweeting a picture of hers, Geri’s and Emma’s shoes. Just to add more fuel to the fire, Ms. B today tweeted that she will be wearing Zuhair Murad this weekend. If you are not familiar with this designer, here is one of his catsuits, as worn by Jennifer Lopez.
Given all the above, it looks almost certain that the Spice Girls will be performing, but which songs? It is heavily rumoured that the girls will perform two tracks, one being Wannabe, and the other is unannounced. Viva Forever would be perfect for the occasion, but the likes of Spice Up Your Life and Stop would also work. The real question that remains though is: why couldn’t the organisers give them the whole night?
Another artist who looks almost certainly to be there is Jessie J. Despite being a relative newcomer to the music industry and not having the best album in the world, Miss Cornish looks good to fill the ‘one for the kids’ role. Although having not mentioned herself having any part in the show, it is rumoured that she will either be performing We Will Rock You (alongside Queen), a track with Tinie Tempah (Invincible perhaps?) or God Save The Queen. Although the former two would be great, Jessie’s powerhouse vocals would shine on the latter. Could this potentially be a Whitney Houston Super-Bowl moment? Perhaps.
Arguably the most bizarre rumour of all is that Kate Bush will be taking to the stage. The infamous recluse has not performed on stage since 2002, and although she has said that she would perform again, it still comes as a shock to think that such a camera-shy woman would make her comeback in front of billions of people. Nevertheless, there is no better stage to remind the world of your greatness than the Olympic one. There are strong rumours that the outstanding Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) will be performed, due to a ‘2012 remix’ of the track being posted on Amazon last night. The track has since been removed, but with a release date set for this Sunday, this performer looks set to play a part in the spectacle.
Another odd rumour is that Australian singer Sia Furler will perform a track at the ceremony. There is very little evidence to base this rumour on, but it has been rumoured that Little Man or Breathe Me will be featured. Although Sia is undeniably talented, she doesn’t warrant a place in a celebration of British music. This is likely to be just a rumour, if they were to hire an Australian to perform, surely Kylie would be a safer bet. Having said that, Titanium over a montage of the games could work.
Having already wowed the world (bar the USA – because apparently a tribute to the 7/7 victims isn’t to America’s taste) with the show-stealing performance of Abide With Me in the opening ceremony, Emeli Sande looks set to return to the Olympic Stadium for the closing ceremony. There are whisperings that she will open the ceremony, accompanied by Professor Green, with the smash hit Read All About It. Could there be a more perfect way to begin proceedings? Given that Heaven was also used in the opening ceremony, it looks like Ms. Sande’s star could be shining very brightly come next week.
The rumours regarding Girls Aloud performing have been circulating for over a year now. Even the band’s manager confirmed that they could be involved. However, there has been no word since as to what’s going on. Perhaps they were nudged out in favour of The Spice Girls (the two in one show may cause heart attacks). With Nadine still in LA, this reunion looks unlikely, but any pop fan can hope that they accepted the offer. Only time will tell.
